Campsite De Papillon is situated at the green German border, close to the Bentheimer Forest. The typical German villages of Bad Bentheim and Nordhorn, are definitely worth a visit. Even though it is so close by, you will discover a completely different culture. De Papillon offers you lots of possibilities and you can enjoy both the Netherlands and Germany.
Camping in the middle of nature
For many people, camping is more than just a holiday. More than sleeping in a tent, camper or caravan. It is a lifestyle. Real campers want to feel, experience and touch nature. Therefore, our motto is: ‘You can never get enough of nature’. That was the reason, several years ago, for De Papillon to expand the park. Closer to nature, for ourselves, but especially for the children.
We have, for example, stripped off a meadow so that the unspoilt nature can return. The heath is already becoming visible. The Drenthe Heath Sheep make sure that small trees do not stand a chance. What is even more special about our campsite, is our own forest. Peaceful and quiet and in full bloom. The forest is even the home of a kingfisher couple. Typical for an unspoilt forest is that this unique and rare bird has apparently starting to feel at home here. This is probably because of the quietness, something these birds are always looking for. The forest is perfect for a walk and to find some rest during a sultry summer evening.
A campsite by the canal
The natural area is made complete by the Almelo-Nordhorn canal that is right behind the camp site. It used to be a shipping canal, but nowadays it is a nature reserve that is of great importance for the area. Birds use it as a breeding area and the canal is full of life and is coloured by many beautiful blooming water lilies. Rare and gorgeous plants such as the maiden pink and the lesser butterfly-orchid grow along the shoulders. Follow the canal and after less than 100 metres, you will reach the German border. Continue and you will see a complete lock from the very beginning of the canal. A magnificent confluence of nature and history in an area of outstanding beauty. Therefore, De Papillon is also called ‘the nature campsite of Twente’.
